Benetti: The Viareggio Yard That Has Built Yachts Since 1873

Benetti is an Italian superyacht builder that began in a small Viareggio boatyard in 1873 and now sits inside Azimut|Benetti, the group with the most superyacht length on order in the world. This is the story of how it got there: the family that founded it, the entrepreneur who rescued it, the designers who shape it and the South Florida office that now leads its Americas business, as of November 1, 2026.

Facts come from Benetti’s own heritage, design and news pages, BOAT International’s Global Order Book, Forbes Italia, Italian and trade press, and a brokerage market report. Figures are as reported on the dates shown and may change.

A Yard That Outlived Its Century

Benetti has been building boats in the same town for more than 150 years. It still launches yachts in Viareggio, on the Tuscan coast, where Lorenzo Benetti bought a small yard in 1873, according to the company’s heritage page (updated March 2026).

The numbers since then are large. Benetti says it has built more than 420 yachts since 1985 and five “gigayachts” of 80 metres or more. It counts more than 100 international nautical awards and more than 300,000 square metres of production space. Its parent group has led BOAT International’s Global Order Book for 26 years running, Forbes Italia reported in December 2025.

The sections below set out how those numbers came about, what the work involves, and what commissioning a Benetti looks like today.

What It Takes to Build a Superyacht

A superyacht is closer to a small building than to a boat. A large one has hundreds of systems that must work at sea for decades. Benetti’s own description of its method, on its construction and engineering page (July 2024), shows how much sits behind the finish a guest sees.

  • A written rulebook for every part. Benetti says it keeps specification libraries for components, with acceptance criteria, supplier quality records and testing and commissioning methods for each item.
  • Quiet by design. Its “Box in Box” method treats each living area as a separate floating capsule, set on damping fitted to millimetre tolerances, to cut noise and vibration.
  • Proven platforms. Benetti develops pre-engineered hull platforms in several size ranges. It says this can bring the first voyage forward by 6 to 12 months, depending on size.
  • Paint and refits. The yard sets its own exterior finish standards. Interiors are tagged by barcode so furniture can be changed or replaced during a refit.

The people count matters as much as the method. In June 2026 Benetti said its group runs 14 industrial sites in Tuscany, in Viareggio, Livorno, Massa and Pisa. About 3,800 people work at those sites each day, and more than 1,000 supplier companies work with the group. Direct employees in Tuscany rose from 442 to 607 over the past five years, the same release says.

Skills are trained, not assumed. Benetti is a founding member of the ISYL Foundation (Italian Super Yacht Life). More than 600 graduates have entered the industry through it since 2015, according to the company.

Origins: Lorenzo Benetti and Viareggio, 1873

Lorenzo Benetti (1844–1914) bought the Cantiere Darsena Lucca in Viareggio and founded the yard in 1873, according to Benetti’s heritage page. It built working boats, not pleasure yachts, according to Wikipedia. Over three decades he launched more than 30 sailing vessels, the company says, including schooners, brigantine-schooners, cutters and the flat-bottomed “navicelli” used on Tuscan waterways.

Almost 40 years after the founding, his sons Gino and Emilio took over. In 1921 the yard launched the St. George, a 51-metre (167 ft) sailing ship that Benetti describes as the largest sailing ship built to that date. She later became a training ship, and she is now on display at Milan’s Museum of Science and Technology, according to the company.

In 1941 Emilio’s sons built the Maria, a steel hull with diesel engines. Benetti calls her a first in history. Wikipedia does not mention the Maria; it calls a later, post-war Benetti vessel the first steel-hulled diesel boat in the locality.

How It Grew: Decade by Decade

1960s: from wood to steel

Benetti’s heritage page dates its first steel luxury motor yacht to 1961. It says this set a new standard for the yard. In 1966 the 22-metre (72 ft) Gabbiano followed. A later Lorenzo Benetti, of the founding family, led the move from wood to steel and the classic Delfino, Gabbiano and Mediterraneo series, according to a Superyacht Times article republished by the IYBA (June 2023).

1970s and 1980s: the first gigayacht

Benetti delivered the 86-metre (282 ft) Nabila at the turn of the decade. Its timeline dates her to 1979 and its fleet list to 1980. Benetti calls her the first and largest gigayacht “ever built at the time.” She appeared in the 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never Again, the company notes. Wikipedia gives her length as 83 metres, so sources differ on the exact figure.

The years after that were harder. The yard ran into financial difficulty in the early 1980s, according to Wikipedia. In 1985 Paolo Vitelli, the founder of Azimut, bought Benetti from a bankruptcy trustee, according to La Nazione (January 2025). Benetti’s heritage page and BOAT International also give 1985. One older account on Wikipedia says 1984.

Vitelli had started Azimut in 1969, while still an economics student, La Nazione reported. Under his ownership Benetti also built a series in composite. The Classic 115 line, begun in 1988, sold about 100 units in a decade, according to the Superyacht Times article.

1990s and 2000s: more yards, new technology

In 2003 Benetti bought the Fratelli Orlando yard in Livorno, founded in 1866, which had built warships, merchant ships and ferries. Benetti says this created its “House of Yachting.” In 2006 it delivered a 65-metre (213 ft) yacht that it calls the first fitted with diesel-electric propulsion and Azipod drives.

2010s: the giga season

In 2011 Benetti delivered its first 65-metre yacht with the design firm RWD. In 2016 it opened a building hub for yachts over 80 metres. Then, as the heritage page puts it, came “The Giga Season”: three yachts of 107 to 108 metres (351 to 354 ft) built side by side in under three years and delivered in 2019 and 2020.

2020s: the Oasis Deck and the 150th

In 2020 Benetti and RWD introduced the Oasis Deck on a 40-metre yacht. It is a fold-out stern area that opens the aft deck to the sea. The idea now runs through the Oasis and B.Now families, according to Benetti. In 2023 the yard marked 150 years with its first private boat show in Livorno, showing twenty past yachts.

Paolo Vitelli died on December 31, 2024, at 77, BOAT International reported. BOAT’s editor-in-chief called him “a true pioneer of our industry.”

The Art: Design Partners and Signature Ideas

Benetti does not design alone. Its Design Hub page (January 2026) says it picks outside studios for each project “based on their visual and technical affinity.” Its in-house Style Department works alongside them. The partners it lists include:

  • Cassetta Yacht Designers (Giorgio M. Cassetta): a partnership of more than ten years. Cassetta designed a 107.6-metre custom yacht, the Class 44M and B.Loft families, and an 80-metre custom yacht now being built.
  • RWD: exteriors for the Oasis Deck yachts, the B.Now family and the Motopanfilo 45M.
  • Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design: custom interiors since 2011.
  • Espen Øino International and François Zuretti: exteriors and interiors of the 85-metre Project LIFE.
  • Luca Dini Design and Architecture: the 70-metre Clear Waves concept, unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2026 with wellness at its centre (BOAT International, September 2026).
  • Malcolm McKeon, Lazzarini Pickering, Bonetti/Kozerski, Lobanov Design and Valentina Zannier: named on other families and concepts.

Three ideas recur across the range. The first is opening the yacht to the water, through the Oasis Deck and the Veranda Deck on the Motopanfilo 45M. The second is ceiling height and glass, as in the B.Loft family’s “residential-inspired concept.” The third is the Motopanfilo, which Benetti describes as a reinterpretation of its navette heritage, a nod to its 1960s and 1970s classics.

The design teams describe their goals in plain terms. Cassetta said of B.Loft that he wanted owners to “feel wonderfully at ease wherever you are on board,” according to a Benetti release (September 2025).

The Business: Ownership, Yards and the Order Book

Benetti is one of four brands in Azimut|Benetti, with Azimut, Lusben (refit) and Yachtique, according to Forbes Italia (December 2025). The group is private and Vitelli family-run. Giovanna Vitelli, Paolo Vitelli’s daughter, has been president since 2023 (Forbes Italia; BOAT International). Marco Valle is the group’s CEO, according to Benetti (October 2025). Daniela Petrozzi is Benetti’s commercial director, according to Benetti (October 2026).

The brand builds at two main sites. Its contacts page lists a Viareggio yard and a Livorno yard. Benetti calls Livorno the group’s hub for large steel construction (July 2026).

Two notes on the table. The GOB counts the whole group, Azimut included, not Benetti alone. And revenue (Forbes) and production value (Benetti) are different measures, so the two figures are shown side by side.

Awards and Recognition

Benetti says it has received more than 100 international awards. Recent ones it has published include:

  • 2020: the 63-metre Metis (since renamed) won a World Superyacht Award for displacement yachts of 1,000 to 1,499 tonnes (Benetti, February 2021).
  • 2024: a custom B.Now 67M won Best Custom Yacht at the World Yachts Trophies, run by Yachts France (Pressmare, September 2024).
  • 2025: the B.Loft 65M won Robb Report’s Best of the Best for Marine, Best Interiors (Benetti, June 2025).
  • 2026: Lady Estey, a B.Now 67M with an Oasis Deck, won at the 21st World Superyacht Awards in the Displacement Motor Yachts, 500GT to 1,499GT category. Benetti also reported a Yacht Style Awards win in Singapore (Benetti, May 2026).

Benetti and South Florida

The US, and Fort Lauderdale in particular, is now central to Benetti’s business. Azimut|Benetti opened its Americas headquarters at Pier Sixty-Six Marina in Fort Lauderdale during the 2025 boat show (Benetti, October 2025). The group said the US was “nearly a third” of its global business. CEO Marco Valle said Fort Lauderdale “is considered the yachting capital of America.”

A year on, the US weighs even more. “Today, one-third of our order book comes from the United States,” Daniela Petrozzi said in October 2026. Benetti calls the US its primary market. Its contacts page lists the Americas office as Office 201 at Pier Sixty Six, on SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale.

At the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, October 28 to November 1, 2026, Benetti planned the US debut of its new Oasis 36M. It also planned two Oasis yachts on the water, of 40 and 34 metres, and the Oasis 42M, which it says has sold nine units (Benetti, October 2026). Federico Ferrante, president of Azimut-Benetti Americas, took charge of Benetti sales across the Americas in February 2025, Marine Industry News reported.

What Buying a Benetti Involves

Benetti groups its range into eight families, based on its yacht range page (checked November 1, 2026).

Family Length, per Benetti What sets it apart
Custom 50 m to over 100 m One-of-a-kind yachts built on tested platforms
B.Now 50–72 m Steel and aluminium, with the Oasis Deck
B.Loft 58–65 m High ceilings and a residential feel
B.Yond 37–57 m Hybrid propulsion and long range
Motopanfilo 37–45 m Classic navetta lines updated
Class 44 m Four decks, designed with Cassetta
B.Neos 40 m Sailing-inspired lines and hybrid power
Oasis 36–42 m Built around the Oasis Deck

Timelines depend on size and how custom the yacht is. The Class 44M Lumina was launched in Viareggio in June 2026 for delivery that summer, Benetti said. At the other end, an 80-metre custom yacht reached the outfitting stage in Livorno in July 2026. Benetti says it is scheduled to launch in 2028. Platforms shorten the wait, and the B.Now 50M platform alone has sold 21 units, according to Benetti (September 2025).

Benetti does not publish prices on its range pages, and we have not found a current, dated price we could verify. Ask a licensed broker for live figures. Useful questions to raise include:

  1. Is the yacht custom, or built on an existing platform, and what can still change?
  2. What delivery date does the contract set, and what happens if it slips?
  3. Which yard will build it, Viareggio or Livorno?
  4. How will after-sales service and warranty work in the United States?
  5. For a used Benetti, what refit history and survey results can you see?

The Bottom Line

Benetti has built boats in Viareggio since 1873, according to the company. A family firm that began with working sailing ships moved to steel luxury yachts in the 1960s. It built an 86-metre yacht around 1980 and, after a 1985 rescue by Paolo Vitelli, became part of the group that has led BOAT International’s Global Order Book for 26 straight years. As of November 1, 2026, the US supplies a third of its order book, and its Americas office is in Fort Lauderdale.
