Bespoke Car Programs: How Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Bentley, Aston Martin and Porsche Build One-Off Cars (2026)
The leading carmakers each run a personalization program, from choosing your own colors and materials to commissioning a true one-off car that can take two to four years and, for the rarest coachbuilt cars, reportedly cost tens of millions of dollars; access to the top tier is usually by invitation, and prices are almost never published. This guide explains what each maker offers, how the process works, what is known about cost and timing, and how heavy personalization can affect resale and insurance, as of October 2026.
Program names, prices and timelines change, and most figures below are press reports rather than maker prices. Nothing here is financial advice. Confirm every detail, in writing, with the maker or its dealer.

Rolls-Royce: Bespoke and Coachbuild
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is “a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BMW Group” and a separate business from Rolls-Royce plc, the aero-engine maker. Its Bespoke program personalizes series cars; Coachbuild creates cars with their own bodies. Former chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös called coachbuilding “the haute couture of our industry.”
- Boat Tail (2021): three cars, each developed with its client over four years, according to CNBC. Robb Report put the price at an estimated $28 million; Rolls-Royce did not publish one.
- Droptail (2023 onward): four commissions. Rolls-Royce said the first, La Rose Noire, involved “nearly two years of development” of its interior. Bloomberg reported it was estimated to cost more than $30 million, and a company spokesperson confirmed that earlier, less complex coachbuilt cars cost more than $28 million.
- Project Nightingale (April 2026): the first “Coachbuild Collection,” “Limited to 100 client motor cars worldwide,” with deliveries from 2028. Rolls-Royce says entry “is by invitation only”; Autocar reported a price from about £7 million, likely to rise with personalization.
Rolls-Royce also runs invitation-only Private Offices at Goodwood and in Dubai, Shanghai, New York and Seoul. It said in January 2025 that Private Office commissions are typically about 25% higher in value than average, and in January 2026 that they more than doubled in 2025.
Ferrari: Tailor Made, Special Projects and Icona
Ferrari describes Tailor Made as an “exclusive programme” for “a limited number of clients per year,” each with a personal designer. CNBC reported in 2019 that buyers needed to have been Ferrari clients for some time, that Tailor Made added 20% to 100% to a car’s price, and that delivery took nine to 12 months after approval; those figures may since have changed.
For a true one-off, Ferrari’s Special Projects program creates unique cars; the recent SC40 was built on the 296 GTB. In Ferrari’s words, “Each project originates from an idea put forward by the client,” the client is “closely involved in assessing the design and verification phases,” and “The entire process takes around two years on average.” Ferrari’s Icona series, begun with the Monza SP1 and SP2, is a limited run of cars inspired by its history.
Who gets a limited-series Ferrari
Ferrari does not publish rules. Reuters reported in June 2026 that its allocation favors established clients, especially those with several Ferraris and those who keep their cars a long time, and that about 84% of new Ferraris in 2025 went to existing Ferrari drivers. Every unit of the F80 had been assigned to a client before production, Reuters reported in 2024.
Bentley: Mulliner
Bentley calls Mulliner “the bespoke offering at Bentley.” Its three portfolios are Coachbuilt (new coachbuilt cars), Classic (continuation cars such as the Blower Continuation Series) and Collections (limited editions and personalization). The Bacalar was limited to 12 cars at £1.5 million, all allocated to existing customers, Autocar reported; the Batur was limited to 18 cars at £1.65 million plus local taxes, according to Top Gear.
Aston Martin: Q by Aston Martin
Aston Martin’s Q division offers an extended palette and bespoke options, and its Q Commission service is “a personal collaboration with our design team,” according to the company. In 2017 Q’s then general manager told Autocar that “every new commission starts with a blank sheet of paper,” and that customers could start at a dealer, at headquarters in Gaydon or in London. Aston Martin does not publish Q prices or timelines. The company reported continued losses and a further profit warning in 2026, so ask how deposits on a long commission are protected.
Porsche: Exclusive Manufaktur and Sonderwunsch
Porsche said in 2021 that Exclusive Manufaktur offered more than 700 personalization options. Sonderwunsch (“special wish”), which Porsche calls its “most exclusive personalisation programme,” has three levels: Factory Commission for a new car, Factory Re-Commission for rebuilding a customer’s existing car, and Factory One-Offs with “completely new parts developed for the car.”
Porsche says a one-off’s concept phase usually lasts about a year and a project typically takes two to three years, and that some wishes must be limited to keep the car road-legal. Motor1 reported in 2023 that the wait to start a project was about eight years and that fees started at roughly $100,000 on top of the car; treat those older figures as indicative only.
McLaren and Lamborghini
McLaren’s bespoke division is McLaren Special Operations (MSO), which in 2025 created Project Viva, a one-off 750S, Top Gear reported. Lamborghini’s Ad Personam program, introduced in 2006, now has studios in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Tokyo and New York, and Lamborghini says 96% of the cars it builds leave the factory with at least one personalized element.
What Personalization Does to Resale
A highly personal car may appeal to fewer buyers later. Ferrari’s chief executive, Benedetto Vigna, said in 2025, as reported by Fortune: “There are some combinations that are not liked or loved by the second potential buyer.” Hagerty’s analysis of Porsche sales found that “color indeed correlates to differences in value”: yellow Porsches sold for more than average but were less likely to find a buyer at auction. Reuters reported that Ferrari’s allocation favors clients who keep their cars for long periods.
Insuring a Bespoke Car
Insure at an agreed value that reflects the car’s bespoke content. Hagerty defines agreed value as “the proven value of your car as determined by you and the insurance company,” and advises reviewing it at renewal. Chubb’s classic-car policy pays the agreed value on a total loss; if you keep the damaged car, it says, “We’ll pay the Agreed Value less the salvage value of the damaged car.” Keep the commission documents, specifications and photographs; they support both the insured value and future provenance.
Questions to Ask Before You Commission
- Which level am I buying: personalization, a re-commission or a true one-off, and who owns the design afterwards?
- What is the written timeline for each phase, from concept to delivery, and is there a waiting list to start?
- What cannot be changed for safety, homologation or emissions reasons, and which requests need engineering sign-off?
- What deposit and stage payments are required, are they refundable, and how are they protected?
- At which stages do I approve the design, and can I visit the studio or factory?
- How might my specification affect resale?
- Will this commission, or how long I keep the car, affect my access to future limited series?
- How will the car be insured before and after delivery, and what documentation will the insurer need?

The Bottom Line
Start with the maker you already have a relationship with, get the timeline, payments and change limits in writing, think about the second owner when you choose colors and materials, and insure the car at an agreed value that reflects what you commissioned.
