30 Oct Hotel Ratings Explained: Forbes Five-Star, Michelin Keys and AAA Five Diamond
Hotel Ratings Explained: Forbes Five-Star, Michelin Keys and AAA Five Diamond (2026)
The three hotel ratings that rest on professional inspections are Forbes Travel Guide’s Stars, the MICHELIN Guide’s Keys and AAA’s Diamonds; each uses anonymous or unannounced inspectors, Forbes and Michelin both say hotels do not pay for their ratings, and they often disagree about the same hotel, so the most useful thing a traveler can do is check all three and the year of each. This guide explains how each system works, what the top tiers mean, how the voted lists and hotel memberships differ, and how South Florida’s best-known hotels compare, as of October 2026.
Ratings change every year. Check the rating body’s own site for a hotel’s current status before you book.

Forbes Travel Guide Stars
Forbes Travel Guide says it “started in 1958 as Mobil Travel Guide” and “created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.” It is “a licensee of the Forbes name, not a subsidiary of Forbes Media.” Its inspectors visit “anonymously as a typical guest,” hotel stays “span a minimum of two nights,” and it says its system “emphasizes service because a great experience goes beyond how the surroundings look.”
Today’s hotel tiers are Five-Star, Four-Star and Recommended. Forbes describes Five-Star hotels as providing “a memorable experience through virtually flawless service and the finest of amenities.” Its 2026 Star Awards, announced February 11, 2026, rated 2,422 properties, including 343 Five-Star, 708 Four-Star and 679 Recommended hotels.
Forbes says, “No one can buy a rating,” and that it does not require “any fee, business relationship, nor commission from the properties we rate.” Trade press has noted that the same company also sells training and consulting to hotels: Skift reported this in 2018, and Hotel Management reported in 2025 that its detailed inspection reports can later be bought by hotels for training. We found no credible report that Forbes sells ratings.
MICHELIN Keys
The MICHELIN Guide unveiled the Key in October 2023 as a hotel distinction to be awarded from 2024, much as its stars recognize restaurants. The first U.S. Keys were revealed on April 24, 2024, and the first global selection on October 8, 2025, in Paris. Michelin’s definitions:
- One Key: “A very special stay.”
- Two Keys: “An exceptional stay.”
- Three Keys: “An extraordinary stay,” which Michelin calls “the equivalent of the Three-Star for restaurants.”
Inspectors “travel anonymously and independently” and judge five criteria: “The hotel is a gateway to the destination”; “Excellence in interior design and architecture”; “Quality and consistency in service, comfort and maintenance”; “Consistency between the level of experience and the price paid”; and “Uniqueness, personality and authenticity.” The September 18, 2026 selection named 2,832 Key hotels: 155 with Three Keys, 657 with Two Keys and 2,020 with One Key.
Michelin’s North America chief inspector said, in an article published by Hotel Management, that “No fees are incurred for hotels within our selection.” Michelin also runs its own hotel booking platform, with a paid membership that offers perks, and AFAR reported that some government tourism boards have paid Michelin to send its inspectors to their destinations.
AAA Diamonds
AAA says its inspectors have evaluated hotels “since 1937” and conduct “annual, unannounced inspections of every Diamond hotel.” It describes a Five Diamond hotel as “A luxury experience with superior services and amenities.” AAA’s 2026 Five Diamond list, based on 2025 inspections, names 154 hotels; its May 2026 announcement says there are “roughly 145.” AAA inspects only in North America, the Caribbean and Costa Rica, so it is not a global rating. AAA says it also offers consulting services to hotels.
Voted Lists and Hotel Memberships
Several other names on a hotel’s website are not inspection ratings:
- The 50 Best Hotels (formerly The World’s 50 Best Hotels) is a ranking voted by an academy of more than 800 people, who each vote for seven hotels they have stayed in during the last three years; results are adjudicated by Deloitte, and hotels “cannot apply to be in, or opt out of, the ranking.” The 2026 list, announced in Paris on September 15, 2026, put Rosewood Hong Kong at No. 1 for the second year running. Hotel Management reported in 2025 that some publicists believe hosting voters helps; the organizer says sponsors and staff have no influence on results.
- Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards are a reader survey, now in their 39th year.
- The Leading Hotels of the World, founded in 1928, and Relais & Châteaux, founded in 1954, are membership collections, not ratings.
How South Florida’s Top Hotels Compare
| Hotel | Forbes 2026 | MICHELIN Keys (2026) | AAA Five Diamond (2026 list) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Surfside | Five-Star | Two Keys | Yes |
| The Setai, Miami Beach | Five-Star | Two Keys | Yes |
| Faena Hotel Miami Beach | Five-Star (per Time Out) | Two Keys | Not listed |
| Acqualina Resort & Residences, Sunny Isles Beach | Five-Star | Not listed | Yes |
| The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort | Five-Star | Not listed | Not listed |
| Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach | Five-Star | One Key | Yes |
| The Breakers, Palm Beach | Four-Star | Two Keys | Not listed |
| The Boca Raton | Yacht Club at The Boca Raton: Five-Star (new in 2026) | Tower at The Boca Raton: One Key | Not listed |
“Not listed” means the hotel did not appear on that list when we checked; it is not a downgrade. Michelin’s only Three-Key hotel in Florida is Little Palm Island in the Florida Keys; no Miami hotel holds Three Keys. One common mix-up: Four Seasons Hotel Miami in Brickell is listed by Forbes as Four-Star for 2026, not Five-Star.
What Ratings Don’t Tell You
- The year matters. Forbes badges carry a year; AAA’s 2026 list reflects 2025 inspections; Michelin updates each autumn. A hotel can change after it is rated, and closures happen between updates: Canyon Ranch Woodside in California, a Three-Key hotel, closed permanently in late 2025 and was dropped from Michelin’s 2026 selection.
- The raters disagree. St. Regis Bal Harbour is Forbes Five-Star but was not on AAA’s Five Diamond list or Michelin’s Florida Key list; Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach is Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond but holds one Michelin Key.
- “Five-star” is also a marketing phrase. If a hotel calls itself five-star, ask whose rating that is.
- An advisor can add perks. A travel advisor, such as a member of Virtuoso, may be able to add benefits a rating can’t tell you about.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
- Which year is this rating from, and has the hotel changed operator or renovated since?
- Is it an inspection rating, a vote, a reader survey or a membership?
- Do Forbes, Michelin and AAA agree on this hotel, and if not, why?
- Does the rating body cover this region at all?
- Is the room category I’m booking representative of what was rated?
- Can the hotel show its current Forbes badge, with the year?
- If I book through a rating body’s own booking service, what do I gain or lose compared with booking direct or through an advisor?
- For a family stay, is the rating as relevant to villas, residences or suites as to standard rooms?

The Bottom Line
Treat Forbes Stars, MICHELIN Keys and AAA Diamonds as three independent opinions, check the year of each, know which lists are votes or memberships rather than inspections, and when the raters disagree, ask why before you book.
